West Mercia Constabulary has paid tribute to Allen Peach, force press officer for 20 years, who died on 19 June of a heart attack.
Allen joined West Mercia Constabulary in 1984, from Devon & Cornwall Police, and retired in March this year, aged 60.
Previously a journalist with the Stratford Herald and Birmingham Evening Mail newspapers, Allen was one of the first professional police press officers in the country. He was involved in many of the force’s most high-profile investigations and incidents, including the murders of Hilda Murrell, Marie Wilkes, Celine Figard and Lee Harvey.
Deputy chief constable Alan Bridge said: “Allen’s contribution to frontline policing cannot be overlooked as the publicity he generated for major investigations encouraged members of the public to come forward with information leading to many arrests and convictions. It seems tragically unfair that after so many years’ service, his retirement was cut so short.”
Media communications officer Kate Tonge added: “Allen led by example.
He had the highest professional standards and a wealth of experience that he shared with his staff. His retirement in March opened up a wonderful world of travel, walking and cycling, and he lost no time in visiting the US and the Grand Canyon. We miss him very much.”
Allen leaves a widow, Ann, and a son, Evan.
