Trinity Mirror has appointed Lloyd Embley editor of The People, six months after he was made acting editor following the departure of Mark Thomas.
Embley, 42, a former assistant editor at The Daily Mirror, said: ‘We are facing the circulation challenge head on, and with the plans we have in place and the considerable talents of our staff, we will ensure The People continues to be a great Sunday newspaper.”
The People has consistently been one of the worst circulation performers in the national press in recent years. In May it had an average sale of 646,577, down 11.39 per cent year on year.
Sly Bailey, Trinity chief executive, said: ‘As acting editor, Lloyd has demonstrated a real grasp of The People’s readership and its market. He has a clear, modern vision for the title’s future along with the right skills to succeed. I’m delighted to appoint him as editor.”

The company also announced that Gary Jones, 46, a former Daily Mirror assistant news editor who has been at The People since Thomas’s departure in November, has been appointed deputy editor.
Night editor Matt Clarke has been made third in charge as assistant editor, and deputy editor Ben Proctor leaves the company.
