‘Mae pawb yn Gymry nawr!’: Dailies in Wales and London get behind the Dragons ahead of Euro 2016 semi-final

By Freddy Mayhew

The Welsh national football team is splashed across the front cover of every major regional daily in Wales today, as well as dominating the back pages of the Fleet Street national papers ahead of their semi-final match with Portugal tonight.

A number of national titles have focused on the rivalry between Wales’ star striker Gareth Bale and his Real Madrid teammate Christiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s famous forward.

The Mirror’s back page led with an image of both players laughing in training with the headline “Anything you can do, Bale can do better” next to an interview with Wales manager Chris Coleman.

The Welsh edition of The Sun put an image of Bale on the front alongside the kick-off time for the match at 8pm.

The Daily Telegraph wrote a Welsh headline on its front page: “Mae pawb yn Gymry nawr! (We’re all Welsh now!).

The South Wales Argus changed its masthead to include the cheer “come on Wales!” as it declared the upcoming match “Our moment” on today’s front page with seven news pages on the team.
