Local heroes: Ham & High investigates media mogul, Yellow Advertisers prompts child abuse inquiry, Hull Daily Mail locked out of police hearing

By Dominic Ponsford

My latest six of the best round-up of regional press highlights.

The mighty Yellow Advertiser in Essex is on fine form again with an abuse into historic child abuse which has sparked a fresh police inquiry. Dogged investigative journalism which has got a result. And a great example of how journalists can work constructively with the police.

The Birmingham Mail wants to know what why it has been banned from attending a police misconduct hearing in which an officer is accused of a sexual ralationship with a vulnerable person. These hearings are a new development across the UK and a welcome move towards openness. But they don't inspire a huge amount of confidence when journalists are excluded with no explanation and no possibility of appeal.

The Hull Daily Mail reports on a how a local terrorism suspect has been freed after winning his fight against extradition.

A great story from Wales Online from a man who has a baby girl thanks to the fact that a stranger donated a heart to his late wife five years ago.

A superb in-depth investigation from the Ham and High into the shady past of a local media mogul.

And the Manchester Evening News has secured a pledge from the council to get the City's Picadilly Gardens cleaned up after collecting 20,000 petition

You can watch me talk about these stories and others from around the UK on The Newspapers, a show which is filmed by latest TV in Brighton and syndicated on local TV stations around the UK.
