The Mail on Sunday was last night named national newspaper of the year at the Society of Editors Press Awards for 2015 last night.
The judges said: "It continues to be a great product that produces landmark stories…It is always entertaining with hard-hitting exclusives and fantastic columnists. It is guaranteed to produce a marmalade-dropper."
It was also the biggest overall winner picking up seven prizes in total including scoop of the year for "Blood money: How Thomas Cook demanded – and won – £3.5 million payout – TEN times as much as parents got – after children's Corfu villa gas deaths… to help protect its image".
A special chairman's award went to The Independent (which closes at the end of this week), The Independent on Sunday (which closed on Sunday) and the i (which lives on under new ownership).

Chairman of judges Bob Satchwell said: "The Indie was a brave innovation, as was its sister Sunday.
"The i proved so many soothsayers wrong. Five years on it has proved something of a driving force. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery especially when some have dispatched print into the history books. Let’s hope the i‘s success is mirrored elsewhere."
