The Daily Mirror and Mail on Sunday were named as the two national newspapers of the year today by the London Press Club.

Broadcaster of the year: Mishal Husain of Radio 4 Today
Blog of the year: Iain Dale
Edgar Wallace Trophy for writing or reporting of the highest quality: Melanie Reid of The Times.
The Director General of MI5, Andrew Parker, gave the key note address. He spoke about the security situation in the UK, focusing on the threats posed by ISIL branches around the world (including Syria), and the capacity of the intelligence agencies to counter these threats.
He described the challenges posed by technological change – both as a result of the increasing difficulty in accessing terrorists’ communications, but also because of the sophistication of ISIL using social media for their own ends to spread extremist propaganda.
His address highlighted the fundamental importance of a free press and the role of MI5 in protecting the UK’s freedoms and democratic values.
