Edinburgh Evening News to switch to overnight printing as part of Johnston Press titles merger

The Edinburgh Evening News is to switch to overnight printing from February.

The move comes as part of Johnston Press's plans to merge the title with The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday, putting 45 jobs at risk of redundancy.

Although the Edinburgh paper will now be on sale from early in the morning it is understood the word 'Evening' will remain in the title.

A Johnston Press spokesman said: “Readers are increasingly turning to the title's website for immediate, first-class coverage of news events and up-to-the-minute information.”

"The EEN print version, with more detailed coverage, analysis and comment by the same, skilled news team – won't be affected by the change in print times.”

They added: “Overnight printing is more efficient – helping to safeguard the title's future – and it means a longer shelf life for the print edition.”

According to Holdthefrontpage, staff on the titles were informed last Wednesday that 28 applications have been made for voluntary redundancy as the company aims to cut between 35 and 45 jobs. The deadline for applications is this Friday.
