British Journalist of the Year in shortlist for £25,000 sport book prize

By Darren Boyle

Sunday Times journalist David Walsh’s expose on drug cheat Lance Armstrong has been shortlisted for a £25,000 sport book prize.

Seven Deadly Sins: My Pursuit of Lance Armstrong is one of the leading contenders for the William Hill Sport Book of the Year Award.

Walsh won Journalist of the Year and Sports Journalist of the Year last December at the BJA ceremony.

The panel deciding upon the winner include  journalist Hugh McIlvanney.

Walsh faces a challenge from fellow reporters Jamie Reid with Doped – The Real Life Story of the Racehorse Doping Gang;  David Epstein of Sports Illustrated with his book: The Sports Gene: What Makes the Perfect Athlete?; and Ed Hawkins’ Bookie Gambler Fixer Spy: A Journey to the Heart of Cricket’s Underworld.

William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe said: "It is fitting that in this, the Award's silver anniversary year, we have a shortlist that not only echoes our opening two years, when rowing and cycling were the winning sports, but also boasts books examining and confronting some of the most topical, controversial and relevant issues affecting sport today. It is a list to be hugely proud of."

The winner will be announced on 27 November.
