Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Mirror titles take on 25 extra journalists to work online

By Gavriel Hollander

Trinity Mirror is set to double the number of journalists working online at its national titles to around 50 staff.

The group will take on around 25 new staff to work exclusively on digital and online content for the Mirror and Sunday Mirror, with the aim of doubling online output.

Eleven of the new staff will be based in Manchester as part of a push into the north of England. Trinity Mirror said it would recruit locally for these roles, which could be based in the offices of the Manchester Evening News.

The digital push comes on the back of the integration of the print and digital newsrooms earlier in the year and the subsequent increase in online traffic.

In January, the group axed around 40 positions across its national and regional titles in the first stage of its move to become a “digitally-focused news operation”. Those job cuts involved losing 92 editorial jobs from its regional titles, while creating 52 new positions, divided across regional and national papers.

In March, the group announced the creation of a new digital journalism unit, led by David Ottewell, a hub news editor at the MEN.

In May, Mirror Group Digital recorded a 62.2 per cent year-on-year leap in digital traffic, recording more than 26 million unique monthly browsers, according to ABC.
