Express & Star photographer inadvertently helps catch suspected thieves in the act

By Press Gazette

A photographer at the Express & Star inadvertently helped catch two suspected thieves in the act.

The unnamed photographer was on an assignment snapping snowy scenes when he captured an image of what appeared to be two workmen battling the elements.

But according to the Express & Star, police believe the men, who were wearing fluorescent yellow jackets, were in fact in the process of stealing £3,500 worth of machinery.

Police were alerted after a member of staff at a local contractor, which was carrying our road works, he saw the photograph in the Walsall edition of the Express & Star.

They have since launched an investigation and are appealing for information about the theft.

It was put in a secure fenced area but when workmen returned to work on the Monday they saw it had been pulled open and part of the vehicle, a hydraulic breaker valued at £3,500, had been stolen.

Pc Grant Dixon, from Bloxwich police station, said: “I would urge anyone who recognises the pair, or the men themselves, to come forward and speak to us.”

Express & Star Executive Editor Mark Drew added: “We are happy if by printing this picture we have helped police in their investigations.”
