Regional publisher Newsquest has announced that free weekly Streatham Guardian is to drop its print edition next month.
The Guardian, which has been under review since the beginning of October, will become an online-only title after the final print edition is published on 15 November.
No jobs are to be lost as a result of the change, with reporters coninuing to work on the website and for the Wandsworth Guardian series, which has an average overall circulation of 53,691.
Readers were told this week: “The Streatham Guardian has just announced it is to become an online-only title. Continuing economic challenges have led the newspaper’s owner, Newsquest, to rethink its strategy in the area.
“The ever-more popular website streathamguardian.co.uk will continue and newspapers previously delivered in Streatham will all be transferred to increase distribution in the borough of Wandsworth.”
Group editor Sean Duggan said: “The Streatham Guardian had not been financially viable for some time and, with no sign of an upturn in the economy, the decision has been taken to close the title next month and reallocate resources to strengthen sister titles.
“It is obviously a source of considerable regret to have to close any title, but I’m pleased we are not losing any editorial staff and will be able to continue covering Streatham via the website while strengthening editorial coverage and distribution elsewhere.”
Tindle Newspapers launched a hyperlocal title in the Streatham area in June.
