Guardian corrects claim that Scotsman editor John McLellan was escorted from office

By admin

The Guardian has corrected its story on the departure of Scotsman editor-in-chief John McLellan after claiming he was escorted from the paper’s Edinburgh headquarters.

McLellan left the company last week when his position was axed as part of a editorial restructure at Johnston.

Today’s correction in The Guardian said:

Scotsman editor-in-chief role axed in Johnston Press cull and Scotsman union condemns Johnston Press’s ‘utter disregard’ for staff were amended because the originals said John McLellan was escorted from the Scotsman building after his role as editor-in-chief role was axed.

He has pointed out that he departed unaccompanied and was not at any point escorted.

McLellan has since clarified the circulmstances surrounding his departure to the news and current affairs website Scottish Review. He said:

Last Thursday, after I had been told I was being dismissed, I went round the building to speak to some of my colleagues, then the morning editorial conference and, finally, I addressed the editorial staff.

I then walked off the newsroom floor, said another quick cheerio, got in the lift to the car park and drove out. All unaccompanied. On my own. Not escorted off the premises.
