Society of Editors survey suggests 29 per cent drop in UK staff journalists since 2007

By Dominic wireposts

A survey carried out by the Society of Editors suggests that UK staff journalist numbers have fallen by 29 per cent since 2007.

This figure was arrived at by averaging out the reduction in editorial staff numbers reported by those who responded. According to the survey of Society members, which around 100 filled out, editors believe that their traditional (print) output has decreased by 17 per cent over the last five years – but that digital output has increased 163 per cent.

The Society said in a statement: “Despite financial and structural pressures, the Society of Editors’ survey of media industry editors and other leading figures suggests that their mood remains positive, and they are determined to focus on quality, innovation and diversification.

“Respondents’ wide-ranging comments focused on the need for greater investment, a quest for improved quality, and continuing development of digital products.”

Most of the survey respondents were from the regional press – the Society of Editors also draws members from broadcasting, magazines and the nationals.
