Kent Messenger’s Geraldine Allinson appointed Newspaper Society president

By Myriam Dijck

Following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, Kent Messenger chairman Geraldine Allinson was today appointed the new president of the Newspaper Society.

Allinson takes over from the managing director of Trinity Mirror’s regional operations Georgina Harvey.

“There is much comment about the challenges facing local newspapers and, indeed, all media sectors today, but the simple fact is that no other media can replicate the local press,” said Allinson. “Our newspapers scrutinise those in authority, support local businesses and campaign on behalf of our readers.”

Allinson started her career in 1986 at the Wolverhampton Express & Star before moving on to Northcliffe Media.

In 1993 she joined the KM Group as development manager and took over the family business from her father Edwin Boorman when she became chair five years ago.

KM Group’s connection with the NS goes back nearly a century when Allinson’s great grandfather was a committee member in the 1920s.

Allinson said: ‘We know that, in tough economic times, the importance of community becomes greater than ever as people seek out a sense of belonging and connection.

“Local papers are the only medium which can really provide this, which is why our readers are increasingly turning to us for help, for trusted and relevant local news and information, and to give voice to their concerns,’she added.

Archant chief executive Adrian Jeakings has been appointed president and treasurer. NS members elect a new president every July.
