Former Western Morning News editor nominated for British Sports Books Award

Barrie Williams, former editor of the Kent Evening Post, the Nottingham Evening Post and the Western Morning News was nominated today in the British Sports Books Awards for the biography of the year, at the London Book Fair.

He is nominated for ‘Get in there!’, the life story of Tommy Lawton, the late England football star, reckoned to be England’s best ever centre forward.

Williams wrote the book in collaboration with Tom Lawton Junior, the footballer’s son.  Williams had a friendship with the footballer which began in 1984 in Nottingham, while he was editor of the Nottingham Evening Post. At the time, Williams persuaded Lawton to allow him to serialise his life in the newspaper, before giving him a job as a football columnist.

The winners of the British Sports Book Awards will be announced on 9 May at the Savoy Hotel, in London.
