Cash prize for students who can come up with money-making journalism ideas

By Dominic wireposts

Kingston University journalism department has launched a new competition with a £1,000 cash prize aimed at student journalists who have an entrepreneurial streak.

“myNewsBiz” is a contest to find business ideas which combine high-quality journalism with making money.

They say: “It could be a hyperlocal website, a new smartphone app, an iPad magazine, a production company, an online video platform, a magazine, or even the next social media platform . . . almost anything.”

The competition winner will get £1,000 to turn their idea into a reality and the runner-up will get £500.

Head of journalism at Kingston Beth Brewster said: “Projects like The Huffington Post, Mashable and MediaStorm show it’s possible to do journalism and run a business, but for many young journalists the idea of being an entrepreneur is off-putting and alien. This competition is the first of its kind to equip journalists with the business basics.”

The closing date for entries is 1 April, and the competition is open to students currently studying for degrees or post-grads and those who have graduated in the last year. More details available from the myNewsBiz website.
