Michael Atherton eyes unique double as SJA unveils broadcast awards shortlist

By admin

Times cricket correspondent Michael Atherton is in line for a unique double after being named as one of six nominees up for the Sports Journalists Association broadcaster of the year prize.

Former England cricket captain Atherton, who was named 2009 SJA British Sports Writer of the Year, could add to that accolade after being included on this year’s broadcast shortlist for his work on Sky Sport’s Test cricket coverage.

Atherton faces stiff competition in the category; however, as other high profile sports presenters have also been nominated.

BBC Formula 1 presenter Jake Humphrey and Ray Stubbs, frontman for ESPN’s football coverage, are also on the shortlist, as is Atherton’s former England team mate and fellow Sky broadcaster Nasser Hussain.

Mark Saggers, a high-profile transfer from BBC Radio to Talksport, and Jonathan Overend, most recently in action commentating on Andy Murray’s run to the Australian Open Final for the BBC, have also been nominated for the broadcast of the year prize.

Voting in the broadcast categories closes at noon on Monday, February 21.

A total of 17 sports broadcasting and writing prizes will be handed out at the SJA’s British Sports Journalism Awards dinner in London on Monday, March 7 – including a new prize this year for the best sports newspaper.
