New York Times aims to ‘boost digital revenue’ by licensing technology

By admin

The New York Times is planning to boost its digital revenue by further licensing the technology its uses to develop applications for smartphone and the iPad.

The FT reported today that the NYT will start offering a technology and design service called Press Engine to other newspaper groups as ‘part of a plan to improve digital revenue as print advertising revenue declines”.

‘Although the NYT, which publishes the eponymous daily and the Boston Globe, has licensed its data and online technology on a limited basis in the past, the new initiative will be the first time it has played the role of technology provider on such a broad scale.”

The FT said Telegraph Media Group, publishers of the Daily Telegraph, and AH Belo, which owns the Dallas Morning News were amongst those groups planning to use the technology.
