BBC newsroom head: ‘We retain the right to make compulsory redundancies’

By Dominic wireposts

Three newsreaders are to be cut amid a round of 20 new job losses at BBC News, the Telegraph reports.

It reports that one weekend presenter on the BBC News Channel and two presenting jobs on the “red button” interactive news service will be cut.

The Telegraph quotes an email sent out by head of the BBC newsroom Mary Hockaday who said: “As always where posts are being closed we will ask for volunteers. However the BBC retains the right, as a last resort, to make people compulsorily redundant.”

Journalists at the BBC are to decide next week whether to ballot for strike action over a proposed pay freeze for staff earning under £37,726 a year.

Staff are also in dispute with management over proposals to close the BBC final salary pension scheme to new members.
