Plans to exclude the press from inquests could be revived, The Guardian reports today.
The coroners and justice bill is due to be published today. And according to The Guardian it includes plans to hold inquests in private and without a jury when national security is involved.
The bill was in the Queen’s speech – when it was revelealed that the bill would include new legislation to stop criminals profiting from their crimes by selling their stories.
But at that stage there was no mention of new secret inquest proposals.
Press freedom campaigners celebrated a victory in October when a clause which would have allowed secret inquests was removed from the counter-terrorism bill.
The Ministry of Justice could not confirm of deny the story today – but said the new coroners and justice bill was expected to be published today, parliamentary time allowing.
