Al Jazeera cameraman Sami al-Haj has been released from Guantanamo Bay after more than six years in capitivity.
He arrived in Sudan early this morning and said “rats are treated with more humanity” than inmates at the Cuban prison camp for terror suspects, Al-Jazeera reports.
In September Press Gazette ran a front page story about the plight off al-Haj in which his lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, warned that the journalist was near death after being on hunger strike since the previous January.
At the time Stafford Smith said that al-Haj was “no more a terrorist than my granny”.
