Former Sun editor Kelvin Mackenzie (not all his column is online) writes in his Sun column today that Chris Shaw, head of Five News, has said the channel’s new £1m a year presenter Natasha Kaplinsky will not present the news wearing jeans and t-shirt.
The story has been widely reported – not least by Mackenzie last week – and the channel’s current advertising campaign ahead of the reveamped news show’s launch on Monday appears to show the former BBC anchor wearing jeans.
Mackenzie employed a rather unconvential roster of characters for his own Live TV venture in the 1990s including a man in bunny suit, a “bouncing weather dwarf”, the weather read in Norwegian and the now infamous topless darts.
On its collapse, he is unrepentant: “The cable channel failed – it was pulled by the idiots of Trinity Mirror. Had it been around toady it would be making more money than the Sunday Mirror and Sunday People combined – although that wouldn’t be very hard.”
