“The Munich air disaster not only savaged Manchester United it also ripped the heart out of British journalism,” the Manchester Evening News recalls today.
A total of 23 people were killed in the 1958 crash, including the eight United players — and eight journalists.
On Monday, The Independent published a report on the eight journalists killed in the crash, Tom Jackson of the MEN, Frank Swift of the News of the World, Alf Clarke of the Manchester Evening Chronicle, Donny Davies of the Guardian, George Follows of the Daily Herald, Henry Rose of the Daily Express, Eric Thompson of the Daily Mail and Archie Ledbrooke of the Daily Mirror.
Update: The MEN is today re-printing its original 1958 coverage of the tragedy.
