Liverpool fan’s complaint over BBC Hillsborough claim upheld

By Martin Stabe wirepost

The Politics Show breached BBC editorial guidelines by making inaccurate claims about the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters, the corporation’s Editorial Complaints Unit has found.

The ECU upheld a complaint, submitted by a Liverpool FC supporter, over statements made late last year by reporter Patrick Burns, the Liverpool Echo notes.

Burns had said that the collapse of the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in 1985 during a Liverpool-Juventus match had led to the segregation of fans in English football matches. In fact, the practice was already commonplace.

The Complaints Unit also ruled that it had been inaccurate to describe the Hillsborough stadium disaster, when 96 Liverpool fans were killed, had been caused by “a late influx of ticketless” fans.

The text of the finding will be published on the Complaint Unit’s website.

Meanwhile, the Mansfield Chad is reporting that Mansfield fans have have been complaining to the BBC about comments made on Match of the Day this weekend by the club’s former manager Carlton Palmer.
