Journalists under attack in Palestine

By Julie Tomlin

Palestinian and foreign journalists were under attack from the Israeli army last year and increasingly from the various Palestinian factions according to a report recently published by Reporters Without Borders.

According to the report the Israeli army attacked or threatened 16 journalists and destroyed the premises of three news organisations .

Since the split between Hamas and Fatah journalists critical of the various factions have been targeted: Palestinian militants have attacked at least four journalists, set fire to buildings and smashed equipment. Six foreign journalists were kidnapped by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The watchdog called on both sides to ensure that hose responsible for crimes against journalists were brought to justice and also proposed the creation of a distinctive sign so that journalists can be easily identified.
