Press Gazette magazine November edition: ‘We need to talk about Kelvin’

By Dominic Ponsford1

Here’s my ‘six of the best’ from the print edition of Press Gazette which – as ever – is only available to print and digital subscribers:

In-depth coverage of the Leveson seminars including contributions from: Dominic Mohan, Richard Wallace, John Witherow, Peter Wright, Paul Dacre, Tony Gallagher and Richard Caseby.

John Dale dissects Kelvin MacKenzie’s bombshell appearance before Leveson and assesses the scale of the gulf between the Daily Mail’s latest star signing and editor Paul Dacre:

“As Dacre fights to save press self-regulation, he finds himself co-existing with his own in-house antichrist.”

As 100 former News of the World staffers are given their marching orders  – Alexandra McGowan, one of the paper’s last graduate trainees, reflects on life after the end of the News of the World.

Big Interview with Independent editor Chris Blackhurst: “We have a huge amount in this paper to be proud of, why should we always present it in a slightly dull worth way?”

Former BBC college of journalism head Kevin Marsh on the Delivering Quality First cuts which will see 650 news jobs go at the corporation:

“DG Mark Thompson looks like a general under heavy fire on every front who decides not to consolidate where he can win but instead pull a few troops from every brigade, while sending a whole army, pointlessly, 200 miles north.”

If you ask me with journalist and political campaigner Eamonn McCann: “Any columnist who is any good will eventually get sacked.”
