Press Gazette’s first monthly issue is out today. It kicks off with an exclusive interview with Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey. It’s the first time in her five years as boss of the UK’s biggest newspaper publisher that Bailey has given Press Gazette an interview.
She hits back at the newspaper industry doom-mongers – and explains why City analysts, who have been talking down media shares, have got it wrong. Bailey says: ‘We have survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the launch of multichannel television, the dot.com boom and bust and we are still here.”
We also ask her: why pay is so low in the regional press, how bad the current downturn is going to get and whether she now regrets ‘cancelling Christmas”.
As well as regular columnists Grey Cardigan, Axegrinder and David Banks we have new contributions from:
- ITV news economics editor Daisy McAndrew,
- Popbitch editor Camilla Wright,
- PR week news editor David Singleton on PR and the Tories, and
- Kent Messenger group political editor Paul Francis on using the Freedom of Information Act to hold local councils to account.
Also in issue one of Press Gazette monthly:
- An in-depth report into how mobile phone technology is changing the face of news gathering and news consumption.
- PA’s legal expert Mike Dodd provides a briefing for journalists on contempt of court.
- We take a tour of Media Wales – Trinity Mirror’s converged multimedia newsroom for its Welsh dailies and weeklies.
- Money Week’s Merryn Somerset Webb explains why the credit crunch has helped her mag to record circulation.
- Editor-in-chief of The Bookseller, Neill Denny, gives a master class on how business to business publishers can thrive in the new media age (and why the demise of its rival weekly title, Publishing News, does not signal a wider malaise in the sector.
There also new in-depth sections on photography, freelancing, news technology and design.
Tips and training section The Knowledge has been expanded to three pages. And we have a new section reviewing and summarising the must-have journalism books.
In short – we believe that Press Gazette (monthly) provides you with everything journalists from every sector of the profession need to be entertained and informed about the industry they work in and above all, to become better journalists.
