News International has won the contract to print the Evening Standard taking it away from Associated Newspapers.
The free London daily is currently printed at Harmsworth Quays in east London, the printing facility owned by Associated Newspapers which prints the Mail titles.
Associated Newspapers stills owns 25 per cent of the Evening Standard after selling 75 per cent of the newspaper to Alexander Lebedev in January 2009.
Under the deal announced today the Standard will be printed at News International’s Broxbourne site, in Hertfordshire, from early next year.
Some 700,000 full-colour copies will be printed each day on four presses working at 86,000 copies an hour. The full print run will take between two and two and half hours.
News International‘s £187m Broxbourne printing plant opened in March 2008 and has 12 presses in total which also produce the Times, Sunday Times and The Sun.
