Tindle Newspapers has announced it is to launch a free local paper for the south London borough of Lambeth later this week.
The Lambeth Post is being billed as a “community newspaper” and will cover one of the capital’s most densely populated boroughs, stretching from Streatham Vale in the south to Waterloo in the north.
The managing director of Tindle’s south London division, Peter Edwards, told Press Gazette that the new paper hoped to hit a circulation target of 40,000 within a few weeks of launch.
About 26,000 copies will be distributed through people’s doors and the rest made available to pick up from local distribution points such as garages and supermarkets.
No extra journalists have been recruited for the title, which will publish its first issue this Thursday, 31 March.
Instead, the 20-page paper will sit alongside Tindle’s paid-for South London Press and the accompanying website southlondon-today.co.uk
Tindle bought the South London Press and about 35 weekly and niche titles in the Greater London area from Trinity Mirror in 2007, in an £18.75m deal.
The group’s founder Sir Ray Tindle is familiar with south London – he launched his first paper in Tooting with a £300 army pay-off after the Second World War.
