Ian Birrell, the former deputy editor of The Independent, has been appointed as David Cameron’s speechwriter.
The Conservative Party confirmed yesterday that Birrell, who is a close friend of party leader Cameron, had been appointed for the general election campaign.
A spokesman for the Conservative’s was unable to confirm if Birrell, who left the Independent earlier this month after nearly twelve years on the title, would continue in the role after the election.
Birrell was amongst those shortlisted as columnist of the year at last week’s British Press Awards.
