NWN Media editor-in-chief joins board

By Oliver Luft

Barrie Jones, editor-in-chief of regional publisher NWN Media, has been appointed to the company board of directors.

The family-own company, which is based in North Wales and publishes 12 daily and weekly papers including Wrexham’s Leader, has promoted Jones to executive editorial director.

Jones started as a reporter with the broadsheet weekly Wrexham Leader 28 years ago before moving to the Evening Leader title.

In the 1980s he spent time working with the North Wales Weekly News group and then with Thomson Regional Newspapers at Chester.

He returned to NWN in 1989 as editor of the Wrexham Leader before being appointed assistant editor and then editor-in-chief of the Evening Leader. He was then appointed editor-in-chief in 2008.

David Faulkner, NWN Media managing director, said: “The appointment recognises the contribution that Barrie has made to the business over many years and emphasises to the communities we serve, the importance the company places on delivering quality editorial services across our entire portfolio, whether in print, online, digital or television.”

NWN Media is expecting to hear later this week from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport if its bid, along with broadcaster UTV, has won the right to run a regional independently funded news consortium pilot in Wales.
