Two journalists each from the Sunday Times, the Guardian and the Daily Mail are amongst eight nominated for this year’s Paul Foot Award.
Sunday Times journalist John Calvert and Claire Newman were jointly nominated for the campaigning journalism award for their investigations into financial and legislative abuses by members of the House of Lords.
Guardian writers Ian Cobain and Paul Lewis were nominated, respectively, for a long running investigation into Britain’s involvement in the torture of terror suspects and coverage of the death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests in London in April.
Stephen Wright and Richard Pendlebury, of the Daily Mail, were also nominated for their stories on lawyer Shahrokh Mireskandari.
The Telegraph’s Ben Leapman joined the shortlist for his investigations into MPs’ expenses while Rob Waugh, of the Yorkshire Post, was nominated for his investigations into spending at Leeds Metropolitan University, the takeover of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club and mismanagement at Leeds City Credit Union.
The winner, who will receive a £5,000 prize, will be announced during a ceremony at Millbank Tower in London on 2 November. Runners up will each be awarded ₤1000.
The Paul Foot award was set up by Private Eye and the Guardian in memory of journalist Paul Foot who died in 2004.
The judges for this year’s award are Clare Fermont, Bill Hagerty, Ian Hislop, Richard Ingrams, Simon Jenkins and Alan Rusbridger. Brian MacArthur is chair of the judging panel.
