Trinity Mirror has announced it is looking to make a number of voluntary redundancies across its three London-based national newspapers.
The publisher of the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and The People has asked staff interested in taking redundancy to come forward.
A Trinity Mirror spokesman would not confirm how many jobs the group is looking to lose, but he stressed that the cuts were all voluntary.
He added that the company’s regional and Scottish newspapers were not affected.
“As a result of the continued challenging trading conditions Trinity Mirror has announced a voluntary redundancy scheme open to all staff based at Canary Wharf,” the spokesman said.
“The scheme covers all staff employed by Mirror Group Newspapers, including those based outside London.
“The scheme will run until the end of the year and will consider requests from staff at all levels until the end of December.”
In a trading update last month, Trinity Mirror said national newspaper advertising revenue in May was down about 10 per cent year on year – compared with the 17 per cent decline seen in the first four months of 2009.
Trinity Mirror chief executive Sly Bailey told staff in a memo late last year that the group had cut 1,200 jobs and closed 44 local papers in 2008.
