The Independent on Sunday has appointed John Mullin as its new editor, two weeks after his predecessor Tristan Davies left the title.
Mullin moves from his current role as the paper’s acting editor and was previously spent one year as deputy editor.
He has held senior positions on several titles including deputy editor at The Scotsman, executive editor of The Independent and Ireland correspondent of The Guardian.
In a statement released today, Mullin said he was ‘thrilled” to be taking over but alluded to the problems the title faces.
‘These are challenging times, but I take over a paper in robust health and with a hugely committed and energetic staff, and I relish the task ahead,’he said.
Ivan Fallon, chief executive of the paper’s parent company Independent News & Media UK, said: ‘John has already stamped his own brand of journalism on our Sunday paper, with a focus on news and news analysis. He is a true professional, with a deep knowledge of how newspapers should be put together.
‘The Independent on Sunday has always punched above its weight in a very competitive Sunday market, and will do so even more effectively under John’s leadership.’
Simon Kelner, editor-in-chief of both the Sunday and daily Independent titles, said he was confident Mullin would carry out his work with ‘vigour and flair”.
The Independent on Sunday had a headline circulation figure of just under 200,000 in December, 0.3 per cent down on December 2006.
