The NUJ is negotiating with bosses at AOL UK about proposed redundancies as part of the restucturing of the business.
The web portal, which sold off its internet access division to Carphone Warehouse late last year, is planning to cut 13 jobs across the company.
‘Meaningful negotiations are taking place as part of the consultation process,’said NUJ organiser Don Mackglew.
The NUJ is only recognised in the editorial department of the website, but a staff forum representing other employees of the Time Warner-owned company is also participating in the negotiations. Talks are due to continue next week.
A spokeswoman for AOL UK said the company was looking at ‘right-sizing’the business as it completes its transition into an advertising-supported content business, but insisted that it was too early to comment on specifics.
Late last year, NUJ members at AOL voted to strike over what they said was a lack of consultation by the company over compulsory redundancies as part of restructuring. That followed Time Warner’s announcement that it had sold AOL’s internet access business to Carphone Warehouse for £370m.
