Journalist drops Irish libel appeal

By Press Gazette

Journalist Ian Bailey has dropped an appeal against his defeat in a libel case he brought against a number of newspapers in the Irish Republic.

His decision was announced on the fourth day of the appeal proceedings in the High Court, sitting in Cork. The newspapers involved were not paying Bailey any damages, but agreed to make a contribution to his costs.

Bailey, 50, who is English and lives in Schull, County Cork, sued the Sunday Times, The Times, the Sunday Independent, the Independent on Sunday, the Star and the Daily Telegraph for libel over reports published in the aftermath of his arrest for questioning about the killing 10 years ago of Frenchwoman Sophie Toscan du Plantier.

Bailey's senior counsel Brendan Nix said: "The defendant newspapers confirm that nothing in any of these articles was ever intended to suggest that Ian Bailey murdered Sophie Toscan du Plantier."
