BBC Midlands Today anchor, Nick Owen has been awarded the Baird Medal, in honour of his "outstanding contribution to television" at this year's Royal Television Society Awards for the Midlands region.
Owen started his career in journalism on the Doncaster Evening Post and has worked in regional and national television since the late Seventies. He rose to fame when he co-presented the seminal breakfast show Good Morning with Anne and Nick, alongside Anne Diamond, in the mid-1980s.
Owen told Press Gazette: "I am really thrilled to receive the award and somewhat stunned. I had no idea about it. "I began to wonder what was going on when Anne Diamond was introduced as a special guest to announce the award — she had been hiding all evening and I didn't know she was there.
"Slowly the truth dawned on me and the next thing I knew I was up on that stage reflecting on my 28 years in television."
ITV Central News presenter Joanne Malin won best on-screen personality at the awards. She is one of the main faces of Central News across the West Midlands and has co-presented Central News at Six with Bob Warman for the last eight years.
Malin has also presented the Breakfast Show for Capital Gold Radio across the West Midlands and has previously presented for Reuters, Sky News and on Live TV in London.
The award for best news/current affairs programme went to Netcare a production by Old Street Films for Channel 4 which investigated NHS practices.
