Women’s monthly Candis has now given away £50 million to charity.
Newhall Publications’ subscriptiononly monthly, which sets aside 10 per cent of its sales income each year to provide financial support to healthrelated charities, was launched in 1962 and switched from doorstep distribution by agents to subscription four years ago.
The last ABC figure for Candis set sales at 301,114, putting the title in the UK women’s magazines top 10.
Editor Jenny Campbell said: “Candis is distinctive from other women’s magazines in that we don’t have fashion or beauty, but we do have a range of strong features.
“It generates a lot of loyalty among subscribers, maybe because it isn’t sold on the newsstand. Thanks to their support we’ve reached this milestone of £50m donated to health-related charities and community groups.”
The magazine brings together features, opinion, health, family matters, celebrities and news of health-related charities. There is a regular monthly free prize draw, with £37,500 in cash prizes, plus high-value competitions and high-profile campaigns.
Its regular contributors include Guardian journalist Polly Toynbee, Virginia Ironside and novelist Laurie Graham.
Newhall Publications say the readership base is wide, though the majority are aged 35 to 55, mainly BC1C2 women.
