The Economist has been removed from newsstands in more than 500 WH
Smith shops over a contractual dispute between the publisher and
retailer.
The BBC News web site
reports that neither side will give details of the dispute and that
talks are still ongoing. The magazine remains on sale at 127 WH Smith
travel outlets – including its shops on railway and airport concourses
– but will not be sold at any high street shops until the dispute is
resolved.
The dispute will not help new editor John
Micklethwaite's ambition to continue the steep sales rises enjoyed by
his predecessor Bill Emmott, who had said he wanted to double global
circulation again in the next ten years.
UK newsstands account for around 40,000 sales of the weekly title.
