BBC beefs up web with live feed from News 24

By Press Gazette

The BBC is beefing up its news website with a live feed from News 24, a new searchable RSS feed and a customised desktop “ticker” service.

Speaking at the interactive seminar at the 2006 Periodical Publishers Association conference BBC News head of Interactive Pete Clifton said: “Our readers want more control and to be more involved. They want to debate, they want to recommend content, they expect to hold us to account and they look for quality journalism."

Clifton added: “Any broadcaster and any national newspaper should be delivering content with more than one platform in mind. None of this should be seen as a threat. This is a time when we can benefit hugely from what our readers have to offer.”

He said that new the service will be “a bit of an anorak’s delight” but would give more of an insight for our audience into what fellow users are using and looking for.

The BBC’s website costs “around £15 to 16 million” each year and employs 400 people.

Clifton said: “Nine years on our site gets four million unique users a day. We would have all needed our arses kicking if we didn’t.”
