Full colour redesign for the Evening Standard

By Press Gazette

By Dominic Ponsford

The Evening Standard unveils a new look this afternoon which sees the paper move to full colour for the first time in its 165-year history.

Each section of the paper is to be colour-themed: with news and comment – blue, business – pink, review – turquoise and sport — red.

Although Standard circulation has been steadily declining in recent years – the paper has pointed out that with its free Lite edition readership has increased. NRS figures from July to December claim a readership of 895,000.

Editor Veronica Wadley said: “I am delighted with these changes, which demonstrate our investment in the Evening Standard. This is a continuing part of the evolution of the Evening Standard and follows on from the successful changes we made in September. The paper will be brighter, sharper and more colourful, accentuating the strengths of the paper. It is the voice of London and every day draws on the drama, intrigue, gossip and the glamour of a great city.”

Columnist Matthew Norman is to return to the paper with a twice-weekly sport column from 8 May and former Daily Mirror editor Roy Greenslade has joined as the paper’s new regular media commentator.
