Evening Post fuels price wars on Jersey

By Press Gazette

By Colin Crummy A consumer campaign by the Jersey Evening Post has
sparked supermarket and petrol station price wars on the island.

The
Fair Play two-page spread every Saturday, relaunched last month,
champions consumer rights, with weekly price comparisons on everything
from a pint of beer to flights from the island.

The paper has
enlisted the help of the Women’s Institute, whose members go undercover
to compile a shopping basket from different outlets, which they then
deliver anonymously to the title.

Carl Walker, creator and editor of the pages, said the watchdog had provoked a response from traders and consumers.

“In
the three weeks since we relaunched, the price of petrol has fallen by
4p and queues of up to 20 cars at a time have started to form outside
the cheapest petrol stations – something not seen in Jersey before.”

He added that sales of the Saturday edition had increased since the revamp.
