Recognition for Comic Relief efforts

By Press Gazette

By Sarah Lagan

The Coventry Evening Telegraph has won an award from the organiser
of the annual Comic Relief appeal for its efforts to raise money for
the charity.

Comic Relief decided the Evening Telegraph’s editorial and
advertisements were the best among regional newspapers in the country.

A
spokesman for the charity, which funds lifesaving projects in the UK
and overseas, said: “It was the aesthetic mix of adverts, jokes, and
local fund-raising stories that really caught the judges’ eye and
identified the Coventry Evening Telegraph as a clear winner.”

In
the week leading up to Red Nose Day the newspaper ran special pages
featuring editorial stories and invited readers to submit jokes, with
the Evening Telegraph donating £1 to the charity for every one
published.

Editor Alan Kirby said: “We are very proud to win this
marvellous award from Comic Relief. This is a fine example of how a
local paper can harness the loyalty of its customers to good effect. It
is marvellous that we can help a good cause and have some fun too.”
