It seems that Mike Lowe’s “Confessions of a former editor” (Press
Gazette, 29 July) amount to nothing more than doing a good job on a
good paper. I know how he feels.
I joined “the club” at the
beginning of 2000. From days full of optimism on award-winning weeklies
(the Witney Gazette and the Bicester Advertiser) I was out of work for
the first time in a 41-year career.
Within a fortnight I was
welcomed to the subs desk at the Newbury Weekly News, a
forward-looking, independently-owned newspaper, where I was offered
casual work. A month later, I was full-time, as chief sub of the paper
and production editor of our Out & About magazine.
Here I
remain, five-and-a-half years later. The fact that I was 57 when I
arrived at NWN did not concern my employers and I like to think that I
have repaid their faith in me with some experience and hard work.
I
now enjoy a less stressful, though still busy, working life, at the
sort of successful newspaper that still cares about its community.
