The industrial dispute at The Observer appears to have been resolved with 13 staff volunteering for redundancy.
Staff were shocked last month when they were given just a fortnight to find 15 people willing to be laid off.
The 13 came forward after the time limit was increased and the redundancy terms improved.
Each
journalist who leaves will receive a month’s pay per year of
employment, with the notice period included. The NUJ is confident that
the issue of the two remaining redundancies will now be settled
amicably.
In a separate move The Observer has poached The
Independent on Sunday’s art director to steer the paper through its
relaunch, expected early next year, in Berliner format.

Roger Alton said that Carolyn Roberts “will be taking a key role in
introducing the redesign for the forthcoming changes to the paper”.
Roberts began her career at The Big Issue as art director and will join The Observer in October.
She replaces Pablo Juncadella and Marc Catala, who are returning to their native Spain to set up their own design agency.
