The
Wrexham-based Evening Leader helped a class of children to produce a
full-colour tabloid newspaper, from mastheads to printing press, as
part of its Local Newspaper Week activities.
Local schools were
asked to submit ideas for a newspaper incorporating all aspects of
school life. The winners, six pupils at St Mary’s School in Flint, sent
in an entry with most of the articles already written and had roughly
laid out an eight-page paper.
There was a front-page splash on whether the 11-plus exams and SATs were effective, written from the pupils’ point of view.
The
St Mary’s Leader included an article on the playground craze Scoobie
Strings, a report on bullying, an interview with a retiring dinner lady
and a voxpop on school dinners. The whole of class six turned up to see
the St Mary’s Leader off the press.
The Evening Leader’s head of
content, Joanne Shone, said: “It was a marvellous exercise on all
levels. We showed the Evening Leader as an even more integral part of
the community, the children had a great time and learnt a lot.”
