By Sarah Lagan Ten journalists’ jobs on the Bristol Observer are
being made redundant from mid-April – including the position of editor
Peter O’Reilly – as editorial is to be provided by sister paper the
Bristol Evening Post.
Three trainee journalists on the Observer have been switched to the Evening Post. Staff received redundancy notices on Saturday.
An
insider said: “We all feel a bit shafted, but getting our severance has
cushioned the blow. We are all sad that a great newspaper had to be
sacrificed.”
The move is part of a £1m cost-cutting programme at
Bristol United Press, part of Northcliffe. The Observer redundancies
will save BUP around £300,000. Managing director Tim Kitchen said: “It
is a tough climate and we have to run the editorial side as efficiently
as possible.” He did not rule out further redundancies.
