‘Bastards’ jibe

By Press Gazette

Irish Times editor Geraldine Kennedy has told readers she regretted
the use of the word “bastards” by controversial Irishman’s Diary
columnist Kevin Myers. This came after a tirade of criticism over
Myers’ description of unmarried mothers relying on state benefits as
having embarked on careers of “mothering bastards”. Two days after the
paper had given over almost a full page to outraged letters from
readers, Myers maintained he had not meant to hurt anyone but accepted
that he had lost both his audience and the arguement.
