Clark leaves The Mercury for lecturer post

By Press Gazette

Tor Clark has left the editor’s chair of one of Britain’s oldest
newspapers, the Rutland & Stamford Mercury, to help set up a new
journalism degree at De Montfort University in Leicester.

Clark,
38, had been editor of The Mercury since 2001 and took up his new
position as senior lecturer in journalism last month. Between now and
September he will be working on the new three-year joint honours
degree, ready for the first students arriving in the autumn.

Before
editing The Mercury, Clark had spent three-and-a-half years as editor
of its sister paper, the Harborough and Lutterworth Mail, where he had
previously been deputy editor.

Clark said his proudest moment as
editor of the Rutland & Stamford Mercury came when it was
shortlisted for the Weekly Newspaper of the Year Award at Press Gazette
‘s sponsored Regional Press Awards in 2003.

He said: “I’m really
looking forward to my new role. It’s exciting to be in at the start of
something which I think is going to be very successful. After 16 years
in newspapers it was a bit of a wrench to leave, but the opportunity
was too good to miss, and hopefully I’ll be able to keep my hand in
with freelance work.

“I’ve been lucky to have worked with some
great journalists and I now hope to do my bit to turn out some more for
the future from De Montfort.”
