John Slater, editor of The Railway Magazine from 1970 to 1989, died on 19 July, aged 76.
John spent 40 years on the staff of IPC in London, starting as editorial assistant on The Railway Gazette, in 1964, before transferring to The Railway Magazine two years later.
After retiring in 1989, he continued to work as a part-time editorial consultant, attending the Stamford Street offices three days a week. He was on his way back to the London office from a volunteer weekend helping out on the Talyllyn Railway, a historic narrow-gauge steam railway in Wales, when he collapsed at Clapham South Tube station.
He was the editor of Talyllyn News for 36 years, from 1936 to 1999, and was the railway’s longest serving volunteer, having worked there regularly since 1952.
Following his memorial service at St Cadfan’s Church, Tywyn, on 3 September, a special Talyllyn train will run from Tywyn to Brynglass.
